Businesses, just like individuals have suffered immensely more so as a result of the measures that have been put in place to contain the spread.

Business owners, senior executives and managers have also had to deal with how to keep their businesses afloat during the crisis. But now that we’re slowly transitioning to the new normal, there are many factors that corporate leaders need to consider – a new business model being one of them.

Other important factors also include reevaluating the financial health of the company, the extent of the impact caused by the crisis and how they can drive new business going forward.

Chief Executive Officers (CEO) have a chance to create new business models. These obviously need to be much better than the old ones. The new models also need to be more collaborative, empowering, functional and profitable.

A good CEO is one that understands this and is ready to put forward these arrangements not only for the good of the business but for the employees too. To put this into perspective, let’s take a look at some of these all-important strategies.

How Businesses Can Cope with the COVID-19 Aftermath

During the pandemic, almost all businesses have had to adjust their strategies. Business processes also needed to change in order to accommodate the new work environment. Naturally, for most businesses, establishing an online presence was extremely necessary.

Remote working also became the order of the day as most businesses created flexible hours for their employees. These strategies are good enough for now, but what happens after the crisis is over? Get ready to turn on the business reset button.

Communication

The first thing that will need to be established will be new lines of communication. Companies will need to look for new ways to communicate with their audience more effectively.

Online marketing is one of the ways that should be highly considered. Social media is one of the most established means of communication today and businesses should enhance their digital marketing – maybe even allocate a bigger budget than before.

This fact became more pronounced during the pandemic as more businesses needed to reach out to their customers, which made social media the go-to solution. CEO now need to reevaluate their social media strategies to ensure that they are not playing catchup during a crisis.

Reinventing the work environment

The moment the virus hit us, our business operations and work environment was instantly put out of gear.

The pandemic was unprecedented and businesses were caught off guard. Although some had a crisis management plan in place, a majority of these plans had not been designed for such a crisis.

Now that most businesses have managed to adopt new work schedules, what happens when normal operations resume is left to be seen. This is a question that still lingers in most CEO’s minds as most employees ask themselves if working from home is working, do I really have to go back to the office?

The new reality will probably demand a new strategy on how business will accommodate and coordinate all its employees. Will it require some to work from home whilst other go back to the office?

Management should also have policies put in place to accommodate a change in the business environment. The quicker CEOs manage this new change the more profitable their companies. Conventional methods may not be good enough.

It is also evident that thanks to the crisis, familiar structures have now faded and there is a new shift in stakeholder behaviour, institutions, and markets. This is where CEOs need to focus on even as they re-strategize on how to move forward.

Building a Crisis Management Team

Every company needs a crisis management team now more than ever. This team will be responsible for formulating a crisis plan that works as well as assist in navigating the company out of a crisis. The crisis management team should have representation from all key departments and headed by the CEO as the spokesperson.

The main objective of the crisis management team is to help the company adjust to any new changes, manage all communication – internal and external as well as ensure that the transition is seamless when the crisis is over.

The CEO should also get a team that will counsel the employees to ensure that their wellbeing is taken care of as a matter of priority so that their morale is restored as well as to boost their productivity. The team should also put together a business continuity plan that will map out what needs to be done to ensure that the business continues to operate.

Reestablishing the Supply Chain

Most businesses get their supplies from different regions – local and international. With the global economy being affected by the pandemic, it might take a long time for those regions to open up or even have enough stock when business resumes. Apart from that, supply policies and procedures are also likely to change as part of the new way of doing business.

What this means is that businesses will need to reevaluate their supply chain. This might entail them buying ahead the raw materials that are in short supply, getting substitutions from places where the supplier is not impacted, and so on. This will ensure that they have a continuous supply of goods when needed.

It is, therefore, crucial for CEOs to fully understand their supply chains more deeply and in more dimensions. This will help them to build resilience and also to have a better response to shifting trade policies.

Preparing for other risks

While COVID-19 has been and continues to affect businesses, other challenges might also occur. These could be in the form of loss of employees, loss of clients and so on. With such imminent threats to a business, CEOs and corporate leaders need to make sure that they are well prepared for unforeseen risks that might occur as a result of a crisis.

Such risks might seem small at first but they might pack a powerful punch that could bring down the company. It is, therefore, important that the CEO is prepared for such eventualities and have a solid plan in place that will ensure that the business is least affected.

As a CEO, you should constitute a team, whether internal or external, that will help you to identify imminent risks, design and execute a plan to neutralize the threat. In short, prepare your brand and team for an effective response.

Looking for New Growth Opportunities

Despite the effects of a crisis on businesses, CEOs should now think of new opportunities that will help the business recoup some of the losses it made during the crisis. This might include new partnerships, new services, and other acquisitions that can help accelerate growth for the business.

The COVID-19 crisis has taught many business leaders a tough lesson. Diversification is key for business survival. Businesses that will continue relying on just one source of revenue might not survive another global crisis.

These are just some of the few measures that need consideration; the new vision, that companies need to put in place to ensure they stay in business. The Coronavirus pandemic has asked one significant question of CEOs “Are you willing to change to a new now with solutions that can be delivered at raid speed?”

Those that respond quicker and smarter will be the ones that show the difference between competing and winning!

-Ends-

COVID19

Secrets to Hosting Smooth Webinars Remotely

<pp:caseid>398329</pp:caseid>

Contibuted by: Hanisha Lalwani, MEPRA Youth Board Vice President and Marketing Manager MEA, PageGroup.

Between April 1 and May 20, I co-organized 11 webinars for Michael Page Middle East and Africa. That’s a handsome number considering the time-frame. I put together our first webinar within a two week period, and thereafter, I was churning out 1-2 webinars on an average per week. But until mid March, I was a complete webinar novice, not privy to the power of the medium and also clueless about the logistics involved in hosting one. But it was evident very early on that with companies switching to remote work, webinars were going to be a powerful marketing vehicle. So, I began my research and very quickly learnt the basics of curating webinars, including reaching out to my network for help.

Hosting my first webinar was quite nerve-wracking: Can the audience here the speaker? Can they see the presenter’s screen? Why are speakers facing dial-in issues? And so on. But there’s no better teacher than experience itself. Before I knew it, I became quite well-versed with the webinar world, and developed a checklist for myself ensuring that our webinars run smoothly – very critical to reflect our brand image and cement a positive reputation in the market.

While both organizers and attendees alike are facing ‘webinar fatigue’, I don’t doubt that webinars will continue to be a key part of a business’ content marketing strategy, to engage customers and clients, and generate high quality leads – if you’ve got your objective and basics right that is. While there’s a lot of literature online about why webinars should be part of your marketing strategy, and how do you promote your webinars, in my research there was not much accessible material focusing on the practical aspects of hosting a webinar – so informed by my own experiences, I have built the below checklist of sorts (assuming you’ve already subscribed to your chosen webinar platform).

1. Speakers and Hosts: If you are organizing a webinar where the key members involved (speakers / hosts) are based remotely, then try and limit the speakers and hosts to two each. Involving too many people adds to the complexity in terms of the flow of the webinar. Have one main host, and a second one as a back up (in the event the main host faces technical issues during the webinar – we’ve faced this twice!).

2.Q&A: Depending on how ‘hot’ your topic is, you can be overwhelmed by the number of questions from attendees, so your back-up host can be made responsible for skimming through the questions coming in during the webinar, and selecting the ones the host can ask the speaker(s) during the Q&A session (usually at the end of the webinar). One of our webinars had over 160 questions come in, and our backup host came to the rescue filtering through them all! On the topic of Q&A, it always helps to also prepare in advance a set of back up questions. Some webinars can have questions coming in very slowly, very few questions, irrelevant questions or no questions at all – to avoid an awkward silence or embarrassment, you’re best to get 5-6 questions ready in consultation with your speakers and using your expertise on the topic.

3. Presenter: Have only one person share his screen and take responsibility of changing the slides. This person could be the webinar organizer, the host, or the speaker(s). Avoiding multiple presenters will eliminate the possible lag time involved with changing presenters/screen using the webinar tool. Also the presenter assigned to change the slides knows to be alert throughout the presentation, and we thus rule out the possibility of any delays breaking the flow of your webinar. On this point, I would also like to add, ensure that your hosts and speakers have the final version of the presentation open on their laptops, in case the presenter’s screen fails to be shared (for whatever reason), another person has the presentation ready and can quickly share his/her screen.

4. Presentation vs. Webcams: In all our webinars, we’ve never had the speakers and hosts visible via their webcams. Instead we’ve given a visual aide to the audience in the form of a presentation. If your hosts and speakers are working from home, turning off the webcam can help ensure your webinar comes across as professional and any distractions are eliminated – the last thing you want are your attendees seeing the speaker’s cat jump onto his/her desk! You would rather develop a branded presentation which includes key bulleted points around the speaker’s content, which also helps maintain the attendees’ attentiveness levels.

5. Practice sessions: That webinars run smoothly is not accidental but by design. I can’t stress how important it is to run 1-2 practice sessions involving your hosts and speakers before D-day. A practice run is important to: a) Ensure your hosts and speakers are able to easily join/connect into the webinar (in our trials, we’ve had some speakers face technical issues accessing the join link – not desirable on the final day); b) Do an audio test and ensure no one has mic issues; c) Familiarize them with the webinar dashboard/tool so they are comfortable with the functionalities offered; d) Get everyone on the same page as far as the flow of the webinar is concerned; e) Time the presentation to avoid running over or under (our practice runs have made very clear which speaker needs to reduce his content, and have allowed us to know how much time exactly would be dedicated to Q&A). Expect to face multiple glitches on the final day, if you’ve not had a dry run or two in advance.

6. Communicating offline: If the webinar organizer, hosts and speakers are based remotely, they cannot benefit from eye contact, hand gestures and hand-written notes critical to communicate with each other. And believe me, there’s a lot you want to say to one another when the webinar is live. So as a best practice, for all the webinars I organized, a WhatsApp group was created, giving our speakers, hosts and myself the platform to communicate with each other during the webinar. I didn’t opt for the Chat feature most webinar tools have to avoid the (high) possibility of a message being sent to the wrong audience (if the sender was not careful with changing the audience the message was meant for). So what do we discuss on WhatsApp when the webinar is live? Things like: a) How many more minutes we should wait till more attendees join and we are ready to kick off the webinar; b) Confirming that the speaker can be heard and the presentation can be seen; c) The back up host warns the speaker that the main host will address a particular question to him/her; d) Alerting them about performance, timing wise… and so on!

7. Going live in 3…2…1: Organizer, hosts and speakers should start joining the webinar at least 30 minutes prior to start time. This is to allow for enough buffer time to account for those inadvertent technical issues, whether it concerns joining the webinar, sharing the screen or being audible. Remind hosts and speakers to mute notifications on their laptop and mobile phone (hearing email pop ups, WhatsApp alerts, etc. can be very distracting for both the speaker and attendee). Also, I’ve found that some attendees tend to join webinars at least 15 minutes in advance, and so you want to be ready. A minute prior to the start time, have your host make periodic announcements that the webinar will begin shortly once more attendees have joined. A huge chunk of attendees join right on time or within the first two minutes of the start time. I have always maintained that while it’s good to wait for more attendees to join, we should not disrespect the attendees that joined early or on the dot, so we have begun our webinar usually 2-3 minutes after the start time, no later than that. Also, have a colleague attending the webinar on standby to alert you periodically conveying that the speakers and hosts can be heard and the presentation is visible. Oh, and don’t forget to check that your session is being recorded!

COVID19

The survey, which polled 108 MEPRA members, also revealed that 45% of respondents’ mental health had “often” interfered with their ability to complete work-related tasks. In the UAE, where remote working was activated in March for all but essential employees, offices are now preparing for a gradual, scaled return while ensuring employee safety and well-being, meeting business performance expectations and protecting corporate reputation.

According to a recent report from KRC Research, while nearly 80 per cent of American employees are proud of their employers’ response to the outbreak and believe they are prioritising safety, only six per cent would trust their employers to determine when it is safe to bring them back to work. Further, 80 per cent of consumers would prefer to buy from companies who treated employees well through the outbreak – illustrating the connection between managing re-entry well and long-term business value.

“Employees are the number one stakeholder for companies today. Being treated with care as they return to the workplace is paramount, and, we believe, a predictor of near-term and long-term success,” said Kate Bullinger, president, United Minds.

Ziad Hasbani, Weber Shandwick’s regional CEO for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, agreed that a humanized approach is key. “There may be differences in the satisfaction and challenges that employees have experienced while away from a physical office environment, so compassion is crucial while rebuilding confidence and continued resilience.”

As curves begin to flatten and companies shift from responding to the initial threat of the COVID-19 crisis, they are preparing to gradually scale up operations. However, they face uncertainty on many levels: the lack of a vaccine or widespread immunity, evolving and conflicting local government and public health guidelines, as well as needs specific to their own employee population.

Workforce Re-entry provides customised re-entry planning for clients, leveraging expertise from within the Weber Shandwick ecosystem of brands as well as outside advisors to guide decision-making. It includes corporate reputation and crisis communications from Weber Shandwick, science-based communications strategy from Element Scientific Communications, employee engagement and organisational change from United Minds and public affairs counsel from Powell Tate. The specialty also includes external experts such as leading epidemiologists, physicians and thought leaders on resiliency, public policy and human resources.

Beyond planning, Workforce Re-entry provides end-to-end execution support throughout the re-entry process including leadership alignment, safety and well-being counsel, employee activism preparedness and workplace design. Additionally, United Minds offers a broader suite of COVID-related guidance, including remote working best practices, post-pandemic retrospective and reinvention road mapping, leader and workforce resilience and cultural vigilance.

“Re-entry provides employers an opportunity to accelerate progress and recommit to their core values and purpose. They should not be thinking about going back to work, but rather forward to work,” said Micho Spring, global chair, Corporate, Weber Shandwick. For more information about Workforce Re-entry and to view a white paper exploring the COVID-19 challenge for leaders, visit United Minds: unitedmindsglobal.com/covid-19-update.

###

About United Minds

United Minds is a management consultancy that specialises in transformation. These exercises from The J Club Director Of Fitness – Jamie Moore, have a range of benefits; from burning fat, enhancing bone, joint and muscle strength to heightening your metabolism, improving posture and boosting your mental mood.

Whether trying these moves out on your own or getting your loved ones involved, #StayHomeWithJumeirah and stay fit and healthy for a strong body and mind.

The Bodyweight Squat

This is one of the most beneficial exercises to do during this lockdown period. The Bodyweight Squat is a full-body exercise that when performed correctly will strengthen your legs, glutes, core muscles and lower back. It will increase blood flow around the body and help mobilise your hips.

How To:Stand up with your knees slightly wider than shoulder widthLower your torso/glutes while keeping your back straightPush back your hips back as you descend down

Avoid knees coming over your toes

Once you reach slightly lower than parallel, pause for 1 second

Then push yourself back up and squeeze your glutes

Keep your core engaged during the full movement

To increase the intensity of the workout, simply add a weight and hold it close to your chest while you squat. If you do not have access to gym equipment you can simply use tinned cans in the cupboards or bottles of water. To further increase the intensity and elevate your heart rate you can do dynamic jump squats.

How To:

Same as above however once you reach the bottom, explode upwards in an jump

Be careful when landing and repeat movement

Bodyweight Lunges

A lunge is a dynamic, full-body exercise that can be performed anywhere. It will strengthen your legs, core muscles, and increase your heart rate.

How To:

Step forward with one foot and place one metre in front

Starting at the hips, lower your rear knee toward the ground

Slowly drop until your legs are both at 90 degree angles, which will happen just before your knee touches the ground

Pause for 1 second at the bottom of the movement

Push through your front heel back up to standing

Keep your core engaged and shoulders back during the full movement

To increase the challenge, similar to the Bodyweight Squat you can add a weight while doing the lunges. Intensity can be further increased by doing dynamic jump lunges.

How To:

Same as above however once you reach the bottom, explode upwards and switch legs in the air

Be careful when landing and repeat movement

Push-ups

Push-ups are a challenging exercise for the upper body and core. For beginners, either start with your knees on the floor or use a raised surface such as a table or countertop. To make the exercise harder, try a full form push up and begin in a plank position, lowering chest to floor. For an added challenge, mix up your hand positions after each set (moving them further apart, or closer together, for example).

If you wish to increase the intensity and elevate your heart rate, try doing dynamic push-ups: take it to the next level and try to clap in between each rep.

Planks

Planks are a great exercise to stimulate the whole body and particularly help to strengthen the core and lower back.

How To:Begin in the plank prone position with your forearms and toes on the floor

Lift knees six inches off the ground, keep your core tight and braced

Keep body straight from head to heels,

Keep head relaxed looking at the floor

Regulate and control your breathing

During the plank be sure to keep control of your breathing and maintain a solid posture at all times. Mix these up and add in side planks too.

Try for 30 seconds at a time, increasing the time to build up strength.

To further challenge yourself, lift one leg up during each set. This will challenge your stability strength to the max.

Simple Stretches

Often overlooked, stretches are an important part of muscle care and overall health. Perform each of the stretches below for 15-20 seconds and repeat three times. Focus on breathing – inhaling and exhaling with the movements.

Hamstring stretch:

How To:Sit down on a mat or floor legs straight

Bend forward from your waist as far as possible while keeping your legs straight.Try and touch your toes if possible

Quad stretch:

How To:Lay on your sideBend top leg and hold footPull heel towards glutes and push hips forward

Shoulder extensions:

How To:Sit on floor/mattHands shoulder width apart, elbows lockedScoot feet/hips out, lowering shoulders down towards groundGo as far as you can to obtain a good stretch

Be mindful of the elbows with this stretchSlow and controlled thoughout

Cobra pose:

How To:Lie in a prone position on the floor or on a mattPlace palms under your shouldersPush your arms up, arching your backKeep hips and lower body on the floor

Feel the stretch and hold

Child’s pose:

How To:Lie in a prone position on the floor or on a mattSit back on your heels, separate your knees hip width apartExhale, bringing your head down, rest head on the floor in front of youPlace your arms stretched out in front of youRelax and breathe, holding this pose

Posture

During this period, it is very easy to relax and forget about maintaining good posture. Especially if you are sitting down for long periods. Make sure you move around your home (either doing exercise, walking around your home or stretching etc.) every three hours to keep regular blood flow and an active metabolism. To help with your posture try regular shoulder roles and neck roles to avoid your shoulder and neck muscles from tightening up.

** Please consult a healthcare professional before commencing any new fitness routine.

For more tips and advice, follow the hashtags:

#StayHomeWithJumeirah #GetFitWithJumeirah

We would love to see how you get on so please tag us on Instagram:

@jumeirahgroup

@burjalarab

@jumeirahbh

@jumeirahalnaseem

@jumeirahminaasalam

@jumeirahalqasr

@jumeirahemiratestowers

@jumeirahcreeksidehotel

-ENDS-

About Jumeirah Group:

Jumeirah Group, the global luxury hotel company and a member of Dubai Holding, operates and manages a world-class portfolio of 15 properties in the Middle East, including the flagship Burj Al Arab, 5 properties in Europe and 4 in Asia with 10 properties currently under construction around the globe.

www.jumeirah.com

COVID19

Here is a taster of ‘Dinner with Michael’…

#StayHomeWithJumeirah #CookItWithJumeirah

SALMON CROQUETTES

Pax Served: 4

INGREDIENTS:

800 grams of boneless, skinless salmon with the dark park of the flesh that runs under the skin removed, cut into cubes the size of dice

2 tablespoons of mayonnaise

4 tablespoons of breadcrumbs or finely crushed biscuits (salty not sweet)

1 teaspoon of finely ground cayenne pepper

½ cup of finely chopped cilantro

1 large or 2 small eggs, beaten

2 large lemons cut into quarters

500 grams of fresh spinach leaves

2 tablespoons of butter

1 tablespoon of sunflower, canola, peanut or other cooking oil

METHOD:

In a large mixing bowl, add the salmon, which had been cut into dice sized cubes, with the breadcrumbs, and mayonnaise. Mix until blended, then sprinkle to cayenne pepper evenly over the mixture while continuing to mix, then add the beaten egg. Finally add the finely chopped cilantro and the juice of ¼ of a lemon. The mixture should be slightly gooey without being too liquid; add more breadcrumbs if there is excess liquid in the mixture.

Wash and stem the spinach, and cook quickly by steaming or in boiling water, just until the spinach has completely wilted and turned dark green. Take off the heat and keep warm in a covered bowl.

Heat 1 tablespoon and butter and one tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan on medium heat until the butter and oil is foaming but not smoking. Using a coffee cup as a mold, fill the coffee cup with the salmon mixture and turn over into the pan so as to create a round cake (you can do this in your hand if preferred). Once the four cakes are in the pan, turn the heat up to medium high until the cakes are sautéing briskly, for about 2 to 3 minutes. Make sure the cakes are not smoking as this means they are burning. Then turn down the heat back to medium for another 3 to 4 minutes. The cakes should start to cook through towards the middle.

Carefully turn the cakes over with a spatula (and fork if needed) and make sure each cake holds together in one piece. The just cooked surface should be a deep golden brown. Turn the heat to low and continue to cook for 3 to 4 minutes.

During this time, drain completely the spinach of all excess water (you can press in paper towels if needed) separate the spinach into 4 equal portions, and in your hand compress each potion to make a round disk as thin and wide a possible. Place each spinach “disk” on a plate, and either heat the plates up one by one in a microwave or place into a heated oven at 180 degrees.

Being careful with the heated plates, place a piece of butter the size of a grape in the middle of the spinach, and then place a salmon cake on the spinach.

Serve the plates with a lemon quarter to be squeezed on the salmon before eating.

This dish can be accompanied by mashed or sautéed potatoes.

ROASTED SALMON WITH BROWN SUGAR AND MUSTARD

Pax Served: 4

INGREDIENTS:

4 Salmon filets, about 250 grams each, bones removed, with or without the skin

6 tablespoons of Dijon Mustard

4 tablespoons of brown sugar

Salt and pepper

METHOD:

Heat oven to 200 degrees centigrade

Lightly salt and pepper the salmon filets

Mix well the brown sugar and mustard in a bowl

Place the salmon filets on aluminum foil covered baking sheet

Spread the mustard/brown sugar mixture evenly over the top of the salmon filets

Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes depending on how well you want the salmon cooked.

Serve with a green salad and steamed vegetables.

STEAK AU POIVRE – PEPPER STEAK

Pax Served: 4

INGREDIENTS:

4 lean trimmed steaks, 200 to 250 grams each, it can be flank, ribeye, entrecote, tenderloin or any other good cut of quality beef.

1 tablespoon of cooking oil, preferably sunflower or peanut

25 grams of butter, a piece about the size of a medium strawberry

2 tablespoons of finely diced shallots

20 cl of French style crème fraiche or liquid thick cream

1 tablespoon of Dijon style mustard

4 tablespoons of coarsely ground freshly black pepper

2 tablespoons of freshly chopped parsley

METHOD:

The steaks should all be of more of less the same thickness, about 1 to 1 ½ inches (2.5 to 4 cm) thick.

Take 2 tablespoons of the pepper and sprinkle on both sides of each steak; then press in so the pepper is embedded into the meat.

Heat the cooking oil in a large frying pan over high heat until very hot, but don’t let the oil smoke.

Place each steak into the pan and let cook for about 2 minutes; move the steaks with a fork so they don’t stick. After 2 minutes turn the steaks over and turn the heat to medium.

Continue to cook for 2 minutes or longer depending upon how well done each guest likes their steak cooked.

Remove the steaks to a warmed platter and cover with aluminum foil.

Keeping the juice in the pan, turn up the heat to medium and add the butter, sautéing for about 2 to 3 minutes until the shallots wilt and turn translucent.

Add the cream, and turn up the heat to medium high, stirring vigorously so the cream reduces and releases the shallots and juices stuck to the pan.

After a couple of minutes, when the cream has thickened but remains liquid, lower the heat to low and pour the meat juice that will have accumulated on the plate where the steaks were placed, and then add the remaining pepper and the mustard. Stir quickly blending all the ingredients.

Place the steaks back in the pan with the sauce, turn them over so as to coat each steak with the pepper sauce.

Serve each steak on a plate and spoon some of the remaining sauce onto each steak, and sprinkle with the chopped parsley.

This dish can be accompanied with a green salad, any type of bean or potatoes.

ROASTED CHICKEN GREEK STYLE

Pax Served: 4

INGREDIENTS:

4 chicken thighs with bone and skin on

4 small yellow roasting potatoes, about 500 grams, cut into 2 cm cubes

50 grams of crumbled Feta cheese (about ½ cup)

2 tablespoons of fresh chopped dill

3 tablespoons of olive oil

2 tablespoon lemon juice

1 garlic clove, finely minced

½ teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon coarse salt

½ teaspoon ground pepper

METHOD:

Make a marinade by mixing well in a large bowl the following ingredients: 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 garlic clove, finely minced, ½ teaspoon dried oregano, 1 teaspoon coarse salt, ½ teaspoon ground pepper

Add 4 chicken thighs into the marinade, mix and cover, marinate for one hour at room temperature or up to 8 hours in the refrigerator.

Heat the oven to 220 degrees centigrade. On a foil-covered baking pan, place the potato cubes and drizzle with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, season with salt and pepper; mix well and move the potatoes to one side of the baking pan.

Remove the chicken thighs from the marinade, pat them dry with a paper towel, and place them, evenly spaced apart, on the other side of the baking pan, next to but not touching the potatoes.

Roast for 15 minutes, then toss the potatoes, return to the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until the chicken thighs are golden brown. Check the potatoes to see if they are tender, if not remove the chicken and let the potatoes cook for 5 to 10 minutes more.

Place the chicken and potatoes on a serving platter, sprinkle the chicken with the remaining lemon juice, scatter the dill and Feta over the potatoes and serve very hot.

Serve with steamed green vegetables.

For more inspiration, stay connected via our social media channels and don’t forget to tag us in your posts while we all #StayHome.

#StayHomeWithJumeirah #CookItWithJumeirah

Instagram:

@jumeirahgroup

@burjalarab

@jumeirahbhotel

@jumeirahalnaseem

@jumeirahminaasalam

@jumeirahalqasr

@madinatjumeirah

@jumeirahemiratestowers

@jumeirahcreeksidehotel

– Ends –

About Jumeirah Group:

Jumeirah Group, the global luxury hotel company and a member of Dubai Holding, operates and manages a world-class portfolio of 15 properties in the Middle East including the flagship Burj Al Arab, six properties in Europe and four in Asia with 10 properties currently under construction around the globe.

www.jumeirah.com

COVID19

Earlier this month we surveyed 72 organisations to better understand the impact of COVID-19 on our industry and the issues affecting our members.

The survey revealed:

53% of respondents will see a significant decrease in projects and activity in Q2, 2020

66% of respondents believe the PR industry will be “Hit hard with potential big business consequences”

More than 60% of total respondents have a negative outlook for their business, for the rest of 2020

63% of agency respondents and around 40% of in-house respondents say they will see a significant decrease in projects and activity for Q2, 2020

41% of respondents are considering redundancies to mitigate the business impact of COVID-19

31% of private sector in-house respondents have already made redundancies, followed by 23% of agency respondents and 10% of government or semi-government

Although the survey revealed it is a distressing time for the majority of our industry, the responses allow all of us to have informed conversations about these issues as we move beyond it. The more informed we are, the better prepared we will be to get through these trying times.

We will run regular surveys to continue to monitor the state of our industry. Thank you for your support.

As Zalami takes over India & Middle East, her expectations for the region are high despite the current circumstances, and her 60 people-strong team is all in.

What does it mean to you to be a female leader in tech?

I don’t necessarily believe in the term ‘female leadership,’ but in leadership in general. I understand why we should and do use this terminology, but I can only hope that one day, we won’t have to. One day, we’ll get to the stage where there’s impartiality around gender and the phrase becomes ‘leaders in tech.’

According to the World Economic Forum Gender Parity report 2020, that day – actually, that month – will come in May 2119. In other words, at the current rate, it will take 99.5 years to reach global gender parity! Before you go into shock, there is a silver lining: 99.5 years is already ten years fewer than the last report predicted in 2018, which is a positive.

My outlook for the future is optimistic partly because I work in a gender-diverse company, where 60% of the leadership roles are held by women. However, being optimistic is one thing and contributing to change is another. For me, it’s important to lead by example and make an immediate impact on both women and men at work. It’s important for me to promote the success of an equal work ethic, in what is essentially a male-dominated industry.

What are your leadership tips for other women aspiring to lead?

Stay true to yourself. Build your business and manage expectations from your perspective. Don’t bend yourself to the status quo; it dilutes your authenticity and makes you second-guess yourself. Rather, choose to back yourself and bring valuable input and solutions to the table.

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed and not always know if what you are doing is right – everyone feels like this at times. This is why, in addition to being true to yourself, it’s just as important to surround yourself with people you trust, be transparent with your team and have a collaborative approach to the way you all will tackle a challenge.

I have learned just as much from my adversity, as I have from my successes. When life throws you a punch, you will subconsciously revert to practices and behaviors that you have built up over your lifetime.

I’d like to share my personal metaphor – a mindful practice I use to keep myself mentally fit as a leader and individual: I have a backpack of life skills, which I make sure to fill with essentials that fuel me and keep me going through tough terrains. Here are six of the most important ones I like to share with those around me:

Connections. We are social beings, so make sure to nurture this aspect, be it by a virtual couch-coffee with a group of friends, an online gaming session of Fifa, regular calls with family far away, or connecting with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.

Digital detox. Take a break from screens when you feel stressed. Take time out for yourself and do something you’re good at or have been wanting to do for a while but never made the time for.

Physical activity. Download a yoga or fitness app – you can find a workout buddy or trainer on Geofit – or download one that’s made for indoors – Dubai Sports Council just launched one. You can also set up space in your home dedicated to home workouts.

Good immunity. It sounds simple, but when people are stressed and overwhelmed, this basic human need gets overlooked although it is at the epicenter of mental and physical wellbeing, as well as, ultimately, survival. Eat well, drink lots of water and get enough rest!

Kindness. Be kind, not just to others but to yourself as well. Ask for help and reach out to those that might need it too.

Meditation. If you are not familiar with the practice, don’t worry; there are some great apps that can get you started. Here are some of my suggestions: Calm by Apple, Headspace and Simple Habit.

My backpack keeps me agile, working outside of my comfort zone and tolerant to risk, rather than being held back by my fear of failure and eagerness to please others. Over the years, it has proven helpful to me and in this time of uncertainty, I am using it more than ever. The importance of mental wellbeing is something I advocate with my team. I recommend my managers and teams to set themselves new personal goals that align with the current circumstance.

What are your business management principles?

People are your greatest investment.

Customer advocacy is a no.1 priority.

Employee training & development is oxygen for a business.

I believe wholeheartedly that if you look after your people, they will look after your business and culture. I have a superb management team that I respect and trust – some of whom I have worked with for five to nine years and who have helped me retain and grow our 500+ customer portfolio in the region. It’s important to have everyone working to their strengths, as our customers benefit from this.

Our company’s HQ is in San Francisco; so, much of the Engineering, Product & Operations gets run from there. Regionally, we have business functions that support local market demands such as – CX, Customer Success, Business Development, Sales, Marketing and Enterprise, Talent Acquisition, and Training. Hiring local expertise and relying on my experienced director team make an exciting combination for our strategic growth goals for the India & Middle East region.

The threat of covid-19 to our families, friends, colleagues, and business, has driven us to work from home (WFH) and has naturally led me to realistically adjust our plans and forecasts. It’s not wise to keep everyone focused on unattainable goals; that’s not good for either morale or business. So, adapt, adopt and improve.

Here are some of the WFH initiatives we’ve implemented around creating a sense of community – our no. 1 priority:

Virtual lunches as a team.

Managers: three touchpoints a day with each team (morning, midday, EOD).

Initiatives to maintain the Meltwater culture, such as: celebratory bell rings for a job well done (these videos have become quite creative); dress-up theme for the last day of the month (it’s a pajama party), etc.

End of week wrap-ups with Dubai and India offices.

I still have an optimistic outlook for the recovery of the region. Both India and the Middle East markets know how to come together as a community and innovate where necessary. Combined, the Dubai and New Delhi offices boast 18 different nationalities and are an accurate, eclectic representation of the region. Regardless of covid-19, our aim remains the same. We want to be seen in each country as a local entity with global expertise. This is pivotal to fostering long-lasting customer relations and strategic partnerships.

COVID19

Threat or Transformation? Positive learnings in disruptive times

<pp:caseid>388503</pp:caseid>

Contributed by Sophie Toh, Founder of TOH, a leading consumer communications group, part of the PRCO Group.

These are uncertain days. In times of crisis, it is easy to cling to familiar and tried and tested working methods that produce known results. However, the impact of Covid-19 has already disrupted our working practice, our strategies and in some instances, our contract clauses, forcing us to re-look at what just a few weeks ago, was seemingly ‘normal’.

Not everything has to be negative. Whilst the impact on the global economy, societies and our PR industry is not clear and is far from resolved, we are definitely seeing challenges to a few key long-held industry beliefs. If looked at with an open mindset, each has a valuable and possibly transformative effect on the way that we interact with, and best support our clients. And in challenging hours, that’s one positive thought to inspire us.

Belief one: F2F is best:

Could this be the end of the three hour ‘chemistry’ meeting, the last order on the business lunch? The crisis has forced us into the virtual world of video calls, and once we are comfortable hanging out here, we can adapt our perception that human contact is the way to build trust and rapport.

Belief two: Consultancy comes for free:

We have been able to demonstrate our strategic abilities in the past few weeks as never before, consulting clients around the clock on their strategic direction, crisis response techniques and internal PR messaging. Our credibility and proven value as consultants can offer us scope to offer a more balanced approach to how we structure retainers and billable hours to include both consultancy and tactical delivery.

Belief three: Remote working isn’t remotely effective:

With ‘WFH’ a mandatory requirement in some markets, team cohesion is challenged. However, employers are now having to equip their workforce for meaningful remote working, with the outcome that employees feel trusted and empowered not to be tethered to their desk, resetting our approach to how we structure our working environments and how we build team spirit remotely.

Belief three: Contracts are binding:

With clients in crisis, contracts and scopes of work are having to be re-thought, moving from campaign to crisis in a day. Contracts that are cumbersome and restrictive will not stand up – meaning built in crisis or ‘holding’ clauses will win out in testing times.

Belief four: Social media must sell:

In a time of stark reality, responsible and kind social media approaches are paramount. I predict that brands will adopt their strategies towards a softer, more fact-based content strategy, to match the mood of their consumers. The era of ‘insta-bragging’ may well be behind us as we move towards truth and transparency.

Belief five: material incentives work best

Anxiety and safeguarding mental wellbeing of staff is now a key concern for senior management and must be part of the day to day culture. Smart bosses will realize that offering staff time out – whether for a mental health day or enriching, educational sabbaticals may now overtake material bonuses as part of incentive packages.

COVID19

<pp:caseid>387339</pp:caseid>

Contributed by MEPRA Strategy Board Member Elías Jabbe

Throughout all the challenges the world is facing during the COVID-19 era, every form of inspiration can make a difference in our lives.

The past few weeks have allowed us to witness how humanity is capable of coming together in the face of adversity in a remarkable way. The generous contributions and acts of solidarity have mirrored the #GrowingTogether mantra championed through the Middle East PR Association’s educational events. As we strive to stay safe and prevent the further spread of Coronavirus, the strong sense of community that has emerged as we adjust to our new reality is nothing short of inspiring.

One initiative that has impacted our Communications community in particular is the constantly expanding MEPRA COVID-19 Resource Hub (http://www.mepra.org/covid-19) which offers timely advice in written and multimedia formats.

This article highlights three growth opportunities for the Communications industry during the COVID-19 era: our chance to Evolve, Connect and Listen.

1) Evolve

Seeking opportunities for continuous professional development during the Digital Decade ahead is the key theme of my February 23 Campaign Middle East Magazine article featuring MEPRA Executive Director Sabrina De Palma and thought leaders in the technology sector based in Dubai and Los Angeles.

Now more than ever, this need to evolve is crucial. Live MEPRA Academy events have been swiftly converted to online format and collaborative video conferencing platforms such as Microsoft Teams have become essential to the point that Teams gained 12 million new daily active users in a seven day period this month.

Across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), we’re observing technology companies of various sizes stepping up to help us make the most of our situation.

Google’s MENA headquarters in Dubai announced yesterday that it added a new Remote Work information hub in English and Arabic to its free Google Digital Garage platform.

Beekast, a startup launched by Moroccan tech entrepreneur Yassine Chabli, recently announced that it has integrated its dynamic features that enhance virtual meetings within Microsoft Teams, while offering three months of free use.

Beekast Microsoft Teams setup instructions

2) Connect

The will to survive after facing a crisis is often reinforced when we connect and exchange our strategies while acknowledging that there is strength in numbers.

That’s why the series of MEPRA online events held in English and Arabic during the coming days will play such an important role.

Following her March 25 #MEPRAAcademy Webinar revolving around Instagram and IGTV content strategy, Leaders In Digital founder Dawn Kubicek is teaching several 3-hour webinars about strategy for YouTube and LinkedIn today and on April 7. These cost effective sessions available on the MEPRA Events Calendar (http://www.mepra.org/events) and are accessible to MEPRA members for 1,000 AED, with unlimited log-ins per organization.

Experts from Hill+Knowlton Strategies will also present a free #MEPRALive webinar regarding inspirational communications during the COVID-19 era tomorrow.

In addition, today marks the beginning of a series of MEPRA events held on Twitter, such as two #AskMEPRA sessions where questions about messaging related to COVID-19 can be asked. Today’s Live Twitter Q&A highlights crisis communications best practices with MEPRA Chair and Hanover MD Jonty Summers at 3:00PM GST, while questions about social media strategy can be answered by MEPRA Executive Board Member and renowned storyteller Peyman Al Awadhi on April 2 at 3:00PM GST.

Next week, the MEPRA Youth Board will analyze how young Communications professionals are navigating COVID-19 through several means. These include releasing an episode of MEPRA’s The Brief podcast on April 5 and hosting two Twitter #MEPRAChat sessions in English and Arabic. MEPRA Youth Board Vice President Hanisha Lalwani will lead the English session on April 6 at 3:00PM GST, while MEPRA Youth Board Member Shaimaa El Nazer will lead the Arabic session on April 8 at 3:00 GST.

3) Listen

The free knowledge available on podcasts — both within and outside of the Communications industry — is an important source of inspiration, especially during the COVID-19 era in which e-learning will play a more prominent role.

Yesterday, the latest episode of MEPRA’s The Brief podcast (http://www.mepra.org/podcasts) united thought leaders to discuss COVID-19 best practices. This discussion featured insights shared by Majid Al Futtaim CCO Tracy Faulkner, Edelman Middle East CEO & PRCA MENA Chair Omar Qirem and MEPRA Chair & Hanover MD Jonty Summers with the host, MEPRA Executive Director Sabrina De Palma. The Brief was launched in 2019 and is produced by the international broadcast specialist, markettiers.

Along with the industry learnings shared by MEPRA, the podcast landscape is full of inspirational stories of overcoming adversity thanks to shows such as Forever Student produced by Dubai’s own Dukkan Media and the On Purpose podcast produced in Los Angeles by Jay Shetty. In a time of crisis or even when one simply wants to concentrate on research and writing, podcasts such as these can serve as welcome additions to playlists.

Hebah Fisher, the founder of renowned Dubai-based podcast Kerning Cultures, taught Communications professionals about podcasting in her MEPRA Academy workshop on March 4. Her expert analysis of the podcasting opportunity in MENA is available in a MEPRA Instagram Story highlight and in my series of podcast reports that also features resources from Google and PRX for starting podcasts.

<pp:caseid>388500</pp:caseid>

Contributed by Louise Jacobson – Managing Partner, Brazen MENA

January 1st, 2020. A new year, a new decade, a time for a fresh start, hope and excitement. Did we ever imagine we would be in this situation less than three months in? The world is in unprecedented times, a global pandemic, countries shutting borders and social distancing becoming our daily norm.

Of course, the most important thing right now is that we stay safe as individuals and do our part to help curb Covid-19. But what should regional brands be doing in this time of financial crisis and uncertainty? The below list is a 10- point PR check list businesses can consider. This is by no means exhaustive, but I hope this at least helps someone somewhere, especially small and local businesses.

10-Point PR Checklist for dealing with Covid-19

1. Re-evaluate everything as often as you can

The comms plan you had last month, or even last week is now defunct. If you haven’t done this already, relook at all your plans now, get a new one in place, and keep refining it, daily if you can. Things are changing all the time and you need to make sure you’re adapting.

2. Talk to your stakeholders

Get a consensus from your immediate team, wider internal stakeholders, clients, media, your social media community, everyone that matters. This ‘audit’ will ensure you have everyone’s input from the start, and will help shape next steps.

3. Re-define your objectives and strategy

Last month’s PR objectives would have to been to drive footfall, or secure event attendance, this month it’s a different story. A phased strategy is a good idea. What do you need to do right now, this week, this month? And what will you do when this is over? Because it will be at some point.

4. Your positioning – safety and empathy with the human touch

Your overall positioning should be this and nothing more. Now is not a time to be benefitting from this situation. People want to see a human touch, a sensitive brand that cares, so this should be reflected in your tone of voice in all communications. Soften language, banish corporate jargon and ensure sensitivity.

5. Prepare, prepare, prepare

Ensure you have statements prepared for all possible scenarios you can think of. As an example, have you prepared for an employee contracting Covid-19 and it escalating to media? Have you got social media Q&A’s for customer concerns? Have all this pre-approved and ready to go. Handling this correctly is vital. This is where brand trust can be won and lost in an instant.

6. Keep communicating regularly

Don’t go quiet. Even if your business is temporarily reduced, you still need to be talking to your communities. The government directives are changing daily, and you have a duty of care to reassure people that you’re complying with this and will keep them updated as things develop. Don’t make this a one-way street. The beauty of social media is that you can have a two-way conversation with your audience, and this is a powerful thing.

7. Engaging and helpful content

A lot of PR activity will be paused for the foreseeable future e.g. events, launches etc. A content-led approach is a great way to provide a helping hand. Remember this isn’t a time to benefit, it’s a time to show you care. If you’re a restaurant could your head chef show how to make an easy dish for a YouTube video for people to recreate at home? Could you collaborate with another brand for a social media giveaway? Get creative, but in the right way.

8. Spread love

The world is in a tough place right now, it’s our responsibility to help each other get through this. What can your business do to make a difference? Can it donate money to charity or its community? Could a local coffee shop deliver coffees to tired doctors and nurses? This will create a positive impact, generate brand affinity and will be remembered for it. Whatever you do, please make sure it’s within legal guidelines.

9. Keep measuring and analysing

This is still fundamental to ensuring what you’re doing is working in the right way. Yes, the quantitative metrics are still important, but more important are the qualitative ones, bearing in mind it’s all about a humanisation of our activity right now. Looking at the comments on social media posts, feedback from media etc. will ensure that you stay on track.

10. Be strong

Elizabeth Taylor once said, ‘now is the time for guts and guile,’ and this is the time. She won’t have been referring to Covid-19 of course, but brands need to show strength, inspire unity and a spirit of togetherness. Even using a simple hashtag such as #inittogether on a social media post can inspire a mindset change.

Stay safe, stay strong, let’s help each other and remember, this too shall pass.

Download the article here.

COVID19

Likewise, married residents with children are more worried than the single respondents (65% vs 58%).

Both locals and expats seem to be fearing the pandemic. In the UAE, Arab expats seem to be the most panic-stricken, with 69% of them saying they are very scared or fairly scared about contracting the virus. Emiratis are equally scared – at 67%. Fear among Asian and western expats is lower- at 61% each.

In KSA, expats are more afraid about getting the infection as compared to locals (68% expats vs 62% Saudis).

The widespread level of fear explains the vast majority of people taking some kind of safety precautions to protect themselves. The most common precaution has been to improve personal hygiene, such as washing hands more frequently or using sanitiser, which three-quarter residents (76%) are doing.

Almost as many (73%) avoid crowded places. Roughly half the respondents refrain from touching objects in public (57%) and avoid physical contact with tourists (49%).

Many wear a face mask in public (37%) and are avoiding consumption of raw or uncooked meat (32%). One in five have stopped going to work (20%).

Given the massive media coverage on the issue, it is not surprising to see that the vast majority (95%) of UAE and KSA residents are aware of the outbreak and have heard of either ‘Coronavirus’, ‘Wuhan virus’ or ‘COVID-19’.

Most (70%) feel well-informed about what to do if they suspect they have coronavirus. UAE residents tend to be more knowledgeable about handling this situation than KSA residents (74% vs 67%). But 18% of all respondents do not have enough information, with young adults being especially likely to feel this way (24% of 18-24 years old respondents).

Witnessing the wide scale frenzy around the outbreak, a quarter of respondents have stockpiled supplies in their house, although a majority (68%) haven’t done it yet.

Many people have modified their travel plans to avoid any risk of getting infected. 36% have already cancelled plans to travel overseas due to COVID-19, and 21% are delaying booking future travel. One in five (19%) are more cautious and are thinking of cancelling all future travel plans.

There are few (6%) who seem unperturbed and are planning to go ahead with their arranged overseas trips, while few others (4%) are actively looking to travel overseas or have already booked an overseas trip.

In the weeks to come, YouGov will continue to track the public’s attitudes and opinions on Coronavirus across the globe.

Data collected online by YouGov Omnibus among 2007 respondents in the UAE and Saudi Arabia between 11th and 18th March 2020 using YouGov’s panel of over 6 million people worldwide. Data is representative of the adult online population in each country.

COVID19

Not just brands, but employees’ own social media platforms are having increasing impact and reach. Now more than ever, consumers are closely watching how brands are communicating to their consumers, clients and vendors across various platforms. Thus, as employees and advocates of the brands we work for, the microscope is on us as well. After all, it does not take time for an inappropriate personal post to go, for the lack of a better word, viral.

How we engage with the community online and offline during this unprecedented situation will be extremely critical. Our social media behavior now will influence the decision-making of key stakeholders when the crisis has passed. Understand that given our present situation, people are looking at online activity for content that will offer value to them. Thus, if you are going to post on social media, especially on a professional networking platform like LinkedIn, focus on sharing content that will resonate with your followers, else you will risk coming across as tone-deaf or sounding too cheerful at a time when things are risky, and businesses and bottomlines are being impacted.

What you should be mindful of…

Be considerate and understanding, and anticipate what your social media audience may be experiencing, especially as many face changes in their professional situation including the immediate obligation to shift to remote working, adapting to new policies their organizations roll out, being anxious over possible lay-offs, and many other personal changes

Be conscious of your tone of voice, especially as your written/published posts will be subject to interpretation

Things are changing quickly, so keep up to date with the news and what is happening; what may have felt like a good message yesterday may not be the right or appropriate thing to share today

Fact check the information you are planning to post, particularly if it’s about how your business is reacting to the situation, the solutions you are offering to customers, and so on – be sure to verify everything

And remember, once you put something up on the internet, it stays there forever. Screenshots have enabled people to store/capture your posts for future reference. We’ve seen time and again in the past how old tweets have come back to haunt many influencers.

If you want to communicate with your stakeholders on social media, you could look at incorporating the below verbiage into your post:

Pleasantries (how are you / hope you are well and safe)

We’re still accessible/reachable via _____

We are taking our activities online…

We’re working closely with our team to support you…

We’re available to chat about your concerns anytime, please reach out to us at ……

We are adapting and reacting quickly to….

Sign off with phrases like ‘take care’ / ‘stay safe and healthy’

Thank you for your support

We understand…

Avoid using the below phrases in your posts:

“It’s business as usual”: Because really, it isn’t! No one wants to hear that now

“Don’t panic!”: Let’s not advise people how they should or should not react and fee as we don’t have visibility on their personal circumstances

“We are a global firm…”: Let’s stay humble and reflect that in our communication, as even the biggest global companies are being financially crippled by the pandemic

If you as an employee are still unsure about the appropriateness of your post, run it by your marketing or social media manager before you publish it online. The above is by no means an exhaustive resource of guidelines. You are more than welcome to share your best practices. Stay safe and let’s aim towards physical rather than social distancing!

COVID19

<pp:caseid>388496</pp:caseid>

Contributed by Shaimaa El Nazer, MEPRA Youth Board member and Consultant

Communications and PR agencies play a fundamental role to support organisations navigate through crises of a macroenvironmental nature, such as Covid-19. Whether your forecast of business in Q1 and 2 are continuing as planned or has shifted dramatically, here are a few key ways to support your clients:

Be there. Reassure your clients that you and your team are available and accessible despite the different work arrangements in place

Issue management. Brush out that crisis communications plan you once developed with your client. Depending on their industry and involvement in the situation, advise them on the level of preparation and action course that need to be implemented in response to Covid-19

Media training. Run a refresher media training to your client’s spokespeople. Aim to fully prepare them should they need to interact with the media over the next few weeks. The longer the situation remains, the wider industries media will look to engage with in order to diversify their stories. They will certainly reach out to your client sooner or later

Monitor, monitor. Ensure you follow the local and international news by the hour. Try to be the initial source of updates to your clients. Send them frequent – but digestible – news bites through their preferred means of communications, and importantly, alert them to breaking news as they happen

Find your audience. With the massive shift in communications dynamics as a result of the outbreak, you might want to run a fresh audit into where your client’s audience best receives communications at the moment (websites, social media, email, text messages etc.) Develop a new content marketing approach for the short term in response

Plan ahead. While it seems we are facing a long term issue, it will inevitably end. You would want your client to be ready with a comeback strategy and plan. Use the time you have now to start working on this plan so you are fully prepared and ready when the time comes

Keep the news coming. The oxygen to the news agenda now is undoubtedly Covid-19 related stories. However, reporters are happy to hear non-virus related stories to vary their headlines and push positive stories. Revisit your news pipeline, push the sensibly mindful ones (long term collaborations, industry insights, initiatives etc.) and park the ones that contradicts the current context

Be genuine and personal. Advise your client to reshape their communications in a way that best resonates with members of the community. Work with them to develop narratives that are relevant and supportive to what their audience is experiencing amidst the situation. This could have a great impact on brand perception, one that will last for long

COVID19

Rather than reports, it will enforce this in close coordination with trusted partners, including public health authorities and governments, and continue to use and consult with information from those sources when reviewing content. Under this new guidance, it will require people to remove Tweets that include:

Denial of global or local health authority recommendations to decrease someone’s likelihood of exposure to COVID-19 with the intent to influence people into acting against recommended guidance, such as: “social distancing is not effective”, or actively encouraging people to not social distance themselves in areas known to be impacted by COVID-19.

Description of treatments or protective measures which are not immediately harmful but are known to be ineffective, are not applicable to the COVID-19 context, or are being shared with the intent to mislead others, even if made in jest, such as “coronavirus is not heat-resistant – walking outside is enough to disinfect you” or “use aromatherapy and essential oils to prevent COVID-19.”

Description of harmful treatments or protection measures which are known to be ineffective, do not apply to COVID-19, or are being shared out of context to mislead people, even if made in jest, such as “drinking bleach and ingesting colloidal silver will cure COVID-19.”

Denial of established scientific facts about transmission during the incubation period or following transmission guidance from global and local health authorities, such as “COVID-19 does not infect children because we haven’t seen any cases of children being sick.”

Specific claims around COVID-19 information that’s intending to manipulate people into certain behavior for the gain of a third party with a call to action within the claim, such as “coronavirus is a fraud and not real – go out and patronize your local bar!!” or “The news about washing your hands is propaganda for soap companies, stop washing your hands.” or “Ignore news about COVID-19, it’s just an attempt to destroy capitalism by crashing the stock market.”

Specific and unverified claims that incite people to action and cause widespread panic, social unrest or large-scale disorder, such as “The National Guard just announced that no more shipments of food will be arriving for 2 months – run to the grocery store ASAP and buy everything!”

Specific and unverified claims made by people impersonating a government or health official or organization such as a parody account of an Italian health official stating that the country’s quarantine is over.

Propagating false or misleading information around COVID-19 diagnostic criteria or procedures such as “if you can hold your breath for 10 seconds, you do not have coronavirus.”

False or misleading claims on how to differentiate between COVID-19 and a different disease, and that information attempts to definitively diagnose someone, such as “If you have a wet cough, it’s not coronavirus – but a dry cough is” or “You’ll feel like you’re drowning in snot if you have coronavirus – it’s not a normal runny nose.”

Claims that specific groups, nationalities are never susceptible to COVID-19, such as “People with dark skin are immune to COVID-19 due to melanin production”.

Claims that specific groups, nationalities are more susceptible to COVID-19, such as “Avoid businesses owned by Chinese people as they are more likely to have COVID-19.”

Starting this week, Twitter’s dedicated COVID-19 Event page has been launched in Arabic in the following MENA countries: Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt. Plans to expand this page to additional countries are underway. The Twitter app must be set in Arabic language to surface the Arabic Event page.

Global expansion of the COVID-19 search prompt

Launched six days before the official designation of the virus in January, Twitter continues to expand its dedicated search prompt feature to ensure that when people come to the service for information about Covid-19, they are met with credible, authoritative content at the top of their search experience. Twitter has been consistently monitoring the conversation on the service to make sure keywords — including common misspellings — also generate the search prompt.

In each country where Twitter has launched the initiative, it has partnered with the national public health agency or the World Health Organization (@WHO) directly. The proactive search prompt is in place with official local partnerships in approximately 50 countries around the world, with countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

The prompt in the MENA region is available in English and Arabic and includes the following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen.

See Arabic translation here

COVID19

<pp:caseid>388491</pp:caseid>

Contributed by Jason Gallucci, Regional Managing Director at Ketchum TBWA

The modern world has not experienced a global pandemic for just over 100 years when Spanish Flu claimed over 50 million lives.

Suddenly (and somewhat terrifyingly) as a result of COVID-19 we have been plunged back into that scenario. Our lives have fundamentally changed and none of us have the experience of knowing how to behave whilst a new deadly virus rampages around the world.

Brands are also trying to figure out their comms strategy as we enter ‘lockdown.’ This is no easy task as it requires extreme sensitivity and a change to ALL comms strategy. Reputations can be improved or even destroyed by clumsy communication.

Here are a few suggestions for brands on how to adjust their messaging during the Covid-19 crisis.

Internal Comms takes priority

1) People come first. Do whatever it takes to protect people and do it immediately. Staff – of every level – must be safe whatever the cost. Any brand that that is seen to be slow in responding due to fear of commercial impact will lose its reputation or worse.

2) Leaders need to lead. The CEO should be very visible and be seen to be in control. Update staff weekly on the latest position and plan. Make regular personal calls to check in with people of all levels. Ensure you have a pulse check on how people are feeling and what issues are arising for them from home working. Remember staff will be feeling very insecure not just about their lives but also their jobs. Reassure regularly.

3) Be clear, calm and concise in your communication. Most of all, be honest. Don’t give false promises to try to make everyone feel better. This is likely to be very bad and that is a fact. We all just have to hold tight through the storm. But it will pass.

4) Be practical. If staff are to work from home, give people rules and tools for communication. Make sure your people still feel part of a team and not isolated. People need to talk – not just text. Video meetings should happen a lot. Two tools that enable easy home communication are Google Chat and Google Meet.

5) Be personal and be supportive. A truly caring company will really build loyalty in tough times. This is not about ‘policy’ it is about being human. Provide staff with number to call if they are worried and want to talk. Will your company offer specific medical support? Will you offer family support if someone is affected or even bereaved? Communicate how you will help with any scenario.

6) Can your people be part of fighting back? Brands that give back to society during this time will be highly valued by staff (more on that later). If your company has a way to help fight the pandemic, it could be a powerful cause to rally your people behind.

All external comms must be re-evaluated

7) Now is the time for EQ. Re-evaluate every campaign. Is it appropriate in the current climate? Look at your campaigns in the context of how people are feeling now and how everyone’s priorities have totally changed. Your previous campaign insights are probably redundant. Now is (obviously) not the time for comedy. Don’t try to make light of the situation – it is deadly serious. Don’t talk about other ‘problems’ that need solving as they will seem totally inconsequential now.

8) Change your Message The world will need to dig deep and find a fighting spirit. Brands can help to foster that by focusing on what really matters in life. Sharing messages of empathy, family, unity and resilience will be well received. This is a time of global reflection.

9) Do not try to benefit from this. Exploiting this situation will backfire quickly. Making branded masks is really not an opportunity! This is a time for elevated morality.

10) Brands that offer genuine support will win love. Could your brand really help society during this crisis? Can you support government health and safety messages with campaigns of your own? Could you go even further and offer community support that is relevant to your business? For example, could finance brands offer support to people who have lost their jobs as a result of Covid-19? Could hotel brands take care of tired doctors?

Now is a time for brands to put people above sales. Corporate communications should follow genuine corporate empathy.

COVID19
